The One Thing That Makes Any Outfit Look Expensive

Hi again,

I’ve styled hundreds of women over the years, and there’s one thing I notice again and again:

It’s not the price tag that makes an outfit look expensive — it’s the fit.

You can wear a $20 top and $30 trousers and still look polished and expensive if the fit is right. On the flip side, I’ve seen people spend a lot of money on beautiful pieces that end up looking cheap because they’re too big, too tight, or just not sitting properly on their body.

As a designer, this is something I obsess over. Here’s what I’ve learned:

1. Tailoring is your best friend

Even the most beautiful dress can look “meh” if it’s slightly off in the shoulders or waist. A good tailor can completely transform a piece. I always tell my clients: Buy for the shoulders and bust, then tailor the rest. Shoulders are the hardest to fix.

2. Know where clothes should actually sit

  • Jackets should end at the widest part of your hips (or slightly above).
  • Trousers should break slightly on your shoe (not puddling on the floor).
  • Tops should hit at the right point on your torso — too long or too short can throw off your whole proportion.

3. Stop wearing clothes that are “almost” right

That blouse that’s just a little tight across the chest? That dress that pulls when you sit? Those pieces are quietly making you look less put-together. When clothes fight your body, it shows.

4. Fabric matters more than you think

Cheap fabric often looks cheap no matter how well it fits. But even mid-range pieces made with better fabrics (think cotton, linen, wool blends, or good quality viscose) tend to drape better and hold their shape longer.

My honest advice:

Instead of buying more clothes, start editing what you already own. Take a weekend, try everything on, and ask yourself:

  • Does this fit me properly right now?
  • Does it make me feel confident when I wear it?
  • Would I buy this again today?

Be ruthless. The goal isn’t to have a full closet — it’s to have a functional closet filled with pieces that actually work for your body and your life.

When your clothes fit well, you don’t need to try so hard. You just look… right.

Would you like me to write a follow-up post on how to build a small but versatile capsule wardrobe that actually works for real life?
