Hi guys,
I work with a lot of men — from busy professionals to grooms getting ready for their big day — and there’s one thing I say more than anything else:
Most men don’t have a style problem. They have a fit problem.
You can wear simple, affordable clothes and still look sharp and expensive if everything fits properly. But even an expensive outfit can look sloppy if the fit is off.
Here’s what I’ve noticed after years of designing and styling men:
1. Your shirt should actually fit your shoulders
This is the #1 issue I see. If the shoulder seam is hanging off your shoulder or digging in, the whole shirt looks wrong — no matter how nice the fabric is. The seam should sit right where your shoulder naturally ends.
2. Trousers are not supposed to sag or drag
Too many men wear trousers that are too long or too loose in the seat and thighs. Good trousers should skim your body without clinging or bagging. When in doubt, get them tailored. It’s one of the best investments you can make in your appearance.
3. Your jacket should close comfortably
A blazer or suit jacket should button without pulling or creating “X” shapes across your chest. If you can’t comfortably button it, it’s too small. If it’s swimming on you, it’s too big.
4. Sleeves matter more than you think
Shirt sleeves should end at your wrist bone when your arms are down. Jacket sleeves should show about half an inch of shirt cuff. These small details separate men who look polished from those who look “almost there.”
5. Stop buying clothes hoping they’ll “work”
I see this all the time — men buy something because it was on sale or looked good on the mannequin, even when it doesn’t fit well. Be honest with yourself. If it doesn’t fit properly right now, it probably never will.
Quick advice from a designer:
Instead of chasing trends or buying lots of clothes, focus on getting fewer, better-fitting pieces. A well-fitted white shirt, dark trousers, and a good blazer will take you further than a closet full of average-fitting clothes.
You don’t need to spend a fortune. You just need to stop settling for clothes that don’t fit your body properly.
Looking sharp isn’t about wearing expensive brands. It’s about wearing clothes that were made (or altered) to fit you.
